What Georgia says about tint.

We only recommend shades that keep you legal, and the tint tool at the top flags anything that is not. Georgia changed its tint law on July 1, 2026 (HB 1161), and the numbers below are current as of October 2026. Rules can change, so confirm before you choose a shade.

WindowSedan, coupe or hatchbackCrossover, SUV, pickup, truck or van
Front side windows28% VLT or lighter28% VLT or lighter
Rear side windows15% VLT or lighterAny darkness
Back (rear) window15% VLT or lighterAny darkness
WindshieldTop 6 inches onlyTop 6 inches only

The state allows about 3% either way on a meter reading, and tint cannot be more than 20% reflective. A medical exemption is available through the state if you qualify. These limits are as of October 2026 and come from the 2026 change to Georgia law (HB 1161), effective July 1, 2026. The rear windows of a "multipurpose passenger vehicle" (built on a truck chassis or with off-road features, such as most SUVs and trucks) are exempt from the rear limits, but the front side windows are not. Some crossovers and minivans may not count, so ask us about your exact vehicle before you choose a dark rear shade.

The plain-English version.

What is VLT?

Visible light transmission is how much light gets through the glass and film together. A 35% tint lets 35% of the light through. Lower numbers are darker.

What can get you a ticket?

A shade darker than the limit for that window. The driver is the one who can be ticketed. Tell us if you want a shade that is darker than the limit and we will make sure you know the risk.

Medical exemption

Georgia has a medical exemption for people who need darker tint. It is applied for through the state, and you keep the paperwork in the vehicle.

Reflective film

Georgia caps how reflective tint can be at 20%. Our films are not mirror-style, so this is rarely an issue.

Meter tolerance

Law enforcement meters can read a few percent either way, so shades right at the limit can read slightly over or under.

Our policy

We install the shade you choose. If it is darker than the law allows, we remind you at the install. This page is a plain summary, not legal advice, so confirm with the state if you are unsure.

Not sure what shade to pick?

Use the tint tool or text us your vehicle. We will tell you what is legal.
